The Cramps and The Mutants: The Napa State Tapes

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Joe Target Rees
1978 / 72min / DCP

Akron, Ohio-by-way-of-New York psychobilly progenitors The Cramps, with San Francisco freakazoids The Mutants as their aggy-arty opening act, give a take-no-prisoners performance for the very, very receptive residents of a psychiatric hospital in Napa County, California (and some out-of-towner punker pals). The show, which took place on June 13, 1978, was recorded for posterity by members of the Bay Area collective Target Video who, shooting on 1/2" black-and-white open reel video, captured this convivial congregation of maniacs (diagnosed or otherwise) having the time of their lives at a precious, precarious moment when their institutional home faced imminent defunding by then-Governor of California Ronald Reagan.
