Director: Theo Angelopoulos
1998 / 137min / DCP
Plunged into despair and battling writer’s block following the death of his wife and recent devastating news concerning his own health, a famed Greek writer (a heartbreaking Bruno Ganz) finds new purpose in the present when he befriends a young Albanian refugee after helping the boy to evade a police roundup and further hazards of the stateless. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, the final film in Angelopoulos’s “Trilogy of Borders” is a work of profound humanity and magisterial beauty, lending a spiritual gravity to the landscapes of seaside Thessaloniki and the rugged Pindus Mountains.
The DCP restoration was supervised by Phoebe Oikonomopoulou - Angelopoulou, executive producer and wife of late Theo Angelopoulos and cinematographer Andreas Sinanos.
