The box office success of Infernal Affairs demanded a follow-up, and given that most of the cast didn’t survive the first film, a prequel was the obvious solution, with Edison Chen and Shawn Yue coming onboard to play dirty police inspector Ming and deep cover cop Yan in a film, set in between 1991 and 1997, that both anticipates the original’s action and functions in its own right as a sprawling, morally knotty tale of police and Triads, fidelity and faithlessness, and dynasties built out of spilled blood. With an ensemble cast that includes favorites Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang, Infernal Affairs II is Hong Kong action-melodrama at its operatic best.
