Director: Wes Anderson
2012 / 94min / 35mm

Twelve-year-old pen pals Sam Shakusky and Suzy Bishop (newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) turn pubescent lovers on the lam, crossing the hurricane-threatened New England coastal island of New Penzance while struggling to keep ahead of Suzy’s bickering parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand), Sam’s former Khaki Scout cohorts, and melancholic cop Bruce Willis. Anderson’s charmingly handcrafted comedy-drama, set in a c. 1965 small-town America that no longer can convince itself of its Norman Rockwellian innocence, draws inspiration from diverse sources that include François Truffaut’s films of adolescence, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and the music of composer Benjamin Britten, which runs through the film up to its miraculous and moving climax.
