Green Card: An American Romance

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Bruce Yonemoto, Norman Yonemoto, Bruce Yonemoto, Norman Yonemoto
1982 / 75min / Digital

The third and last installment in the Yonemoto Brothers’ “Soap Opera Series,” works that make playful and satirical use of the visual and verbal clichés of tawdry television melodramas, Green Card is an absurdist send-up of the culture industry in 1980s Los Angeles, in which a Japanese artist studying in the US, Nobuhara, marries an American filmmaker/surfer in order to ensure that she can continue her career stateside—but while rejecting the hidebound tradition of her homeland, she soon finds herself seduced by an equally oppressive Hollywood tradition, that of the propagandization of romantic love.
