Director: Elaine May
1972 / 106min / 35mm
A witheringly funny story of romanticized sexual longing running smack up against reality, May’s riposte to old partner Mike Nichols’s The Graduate stars Charles Grodin as a New York sporting goods salesman who regrets his family-sanctioned marriage to a nice Jewish girl (May’s daughter Jeannie Berlin) the moment he meets shiksa dream Cybill Shepherd on his honeymoon. DP Owen Roizman starkly contrasts the changes of setting, from Miami to Minnesota, and maintains the atmosphere of brittle hilarity throughout.
