Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Arthur Harari
2021 / 173min / DCP

Yuya Endo stars as the last holdout of the Emperor’s army, Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who, almost 30 years after the end of World War II, continues to live and fight for the cause on a remote island in the Philippines. Based on the true story of Onoda, who died in 2014 and who director Harari had occasion to meet, 10,000 Nights in the Jungle—an international co-production on which Chou acted as co-producer and Cambodian line producer—is an absorbing, compassionate, and oddly poignant character study of a man who has spent his adult life in the grips of fanatical devotion, from the Oscar-winning co-writer with Justine Triet of Anatomy of a Fall.

"Loosely based on the story of Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoda, Harari's film is one of those uniquely transformative cinematic experiences in which, for its duration, an entire existence is deposited in the consciousness of its audience. It is for me was one of the greatest films made in the last decade."—Davy Chou
