Fleischman took home a richly deserved Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing for his work on Scorsese’s unexpected—and thoroughly delightful—turn to family-friendly fare. A storybook tale of an orphaned 12-year-old who keeps up the clocks at Paris’s Gare Montparnasse following his father’s death who, through a serendipitous encounter with aged, forgotten filmmaker Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley), finds a new makeshift family through his immersion in the world of cinema. From the pulsing sounds of the busy train station to the bravura nightmare sequence in which a locomotive smashes through the station’s walls, Fleischman’s marvelously detailed soundscapes give Scorsese’s pre-war Paris period piece an immediate thrumming vitality.

Introduction and Q&A with Sound Engineer and Re-Recording Mixer Tom Fleischman, moderated by Music Editor Missy Cohen, MPSE, on Sunday, June 16th
