Director: Chris Marker
1985 / 74min / DCP
On the shoot of 1985’s Ran Marker observes the storied Japanese director Akira Kurosawa—referred to by Marker throughout as “sensai”—as he orchestrates perhaps his grandest and most ambitious work, commanding literal armies of extras in swarming military formations from behind his trademark sunglasses. A scrupulously detailed record of filmmaking process that lingers over the thousands of granular details that must be attended to in order to create a work of such sprawling scope, as well as a singular depiction of the lulls and longueurs that attend life on a film set.
