A landmark in cinematic modernism that, per Martin Scorsese, is “as fresh and startling as it was 50 years ago,” the opening salvo of Godard’s revolutionary career stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as a Humphrey Bogart-aping Paris hood who goes on the lam with Herald Tribune-hawking gal pal Jean Seberg after popping a cop. Jean-Pierre Melville, who appears as the novelist Parvulesco (stated goals: “to become immortal, then die”), advised extensive edits to the young filmmaker’s original three-hour cut, to which he responded with the film’s extensive, nigh-unprecedented “jump cuts.”
