King of Hearts

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Philippe de Broca
1996 / 102min / DCP

In the final days of World War I, Scottish soldier Private Charles Plumpick (Alan Bates) arrives at a French village on a mission to disarm a bomb left behind by the retreating Germans, only to discover its lone remaining residents are in fact former wards of the local psychiatric hospital—who Plumpick soon comes to see as no more “insane” than the architects of the slaughter that has consumed Europe. A box-office disappointment on its initial release, de Broca’s film—lovingly lensed by Pierre Lhomme and featuring a score by Georges Delerue (Contempt)—would later become a campus film society perennial during the days of the anti-Vietnam War movement.

This movie was restored in 2016 by Technicolor for Alex Productions, represented by Marina Girard-Muttelet with the support of the CNC in France.

The restoration and color grading work was done in 4K using the original Techniscope negative under the supervision of Pierre Lhomme, AFC.

Philippe de Broca’s family thanks John Ptak and Charles Cohen who enabled this movie to be distributed again in the United States.
