The Whitney Review: Ciao! Manhattan
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: John Palmer, David Weisman
1974 / 91min / DCP
Palmer and Weisman’s candid, death-haunted avant-garde docudrama portrait of actress, model, and Andy Warhol Factory “It Girl” Edie Sedgwick recaps, in semi-autobiographical style, her meteoric rise (in the character of Susan Superstar) through the Swinging ’60s as well her subsequent struggles with mental illness and the substance addictions that would claim her life mere weeks after the end of the Ciao! Manhattan shoot. A sobering snapshot of a bygone counterculture and a de-glammed depiction of the price of fame.
Introduction and post-screening salon featuring Whitney Mallett, founder and editor of The Whitney Review, with poet Em Brill and writer Alexandra Auder on Saturday, January 27th
