Back when Tom Cruise was still willing to venture away from tried-and-true tentpole properties he re-teamed with Jerry Maguire writer-director Crowe to made one of the wildest and wooliest films of his career, a fever dream remake of Alejandro Amenábar’s psychological puzzle/sci-fi thriller Abre los ojos, in which Cruise portrays a playboy publishing magnate pushed into soul-searching mode after a lover’s suicide-by-car (Penélope Cruz) leaves his million-dollar mug mangled beyond recognition. Ridiculed as a Cruise vanity project on release, over the years Vanilla Sky has been re-evaluated as a blockbuster of rare eccentricity and daring.
