Director: Ann Hui
2020 / 144min / DCP
One of the foremost talents of the Hong Kong New Wave, Hui is also arguably Chang’s finest cinematic translator, adapting the author for the third time in her Love After Love, inspired by Chang’s first published short story, Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier. An achingly elegant period melodrama boasting cinematography by long-time Wong Kar-wai collaborator Christopher Doyle and a wistful score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of the composer’s last, Hui’s 30th feature follows a young woman, Weilong (Sandra Ma), newly arrived in Hong Kong from Shanghai, her plans to pursue her education side-tracked by the machinations of her aristocratic aunt (Faye Yu) and the prospect of romance with her aunt’s former lover (Eddie Peng).
