The Wall
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Jürgen Böttcher
1990 / 99min / 35mm
East German filmmaker and painter Böttcher’s roving documentary contemplates the emblematic and historical importance of the Berlin Wall at the moment of its destruction, strikingly bringing it to life with vérité-style footage of the days leading up to and during its fall, including street scenes of excited children, news reporters, and tourists alongside blank-faced officials and abandoned subway stations. As Böttcher projects evocative archival footage from key moments in German history, going back to the days of Emperor Wilhelm, onto the Wall’s ruins, the result is an arresting time capsule as well as a meditation on Berlin’s past and present, capturing the exuberance and uncertainty of the city (and world) at a crucial turning point.
