Our House
Director: Yui Kiyohara
2017 / 80min / DCP
Insinuatingly atmospheric and proceeding with a chilling deliberation, Kiyohara’s assured directorial debut (praised by, among others, Kiyoshi Kurosawa) is comprised of two intwined stories set in the same single small home in a sleepy seaside town. Aside from their shared location, the relationship between these twinned tales—concerning a 14-year-old mourning her father’s death and her mother’s new independence and a twentysomething who invites an amnesiac older woman to become her housemate—is deliberately ambiguous, with the possible interpretations only multiplying as Kiyohara unfolds her mysterious and unsettling tale of porous parallel realities, buried secrets, and symbiotic relationships.
