Watership Down
Director: Martin Rosen
1978 / 91min / DCP
Adapted from Richard Adams’s cherished allegorical novel concerning the universal longing for freedom in times of strife, Watership Down follows a group of rabbits on their perilous journey to a new home after one of their number (voiced by John Hurt) is struck with a terrifying augury of the coming destruction of their warren. A tough-minded “children’s” film whose lovingly hand-drawn, impressionistic animation, outbursts of violence, and occasionally apocalyptic imagery place it miles away from today’s brightly colored, reassuringly affirmative CGI cartoons.
Due to a pronounced red-shift on the 35mm print, screenings of Watership Down on Saturday, September 23rd and Monday, September 25th, will be exhibited on DCP.
