Loosely inspired by the 1969 UK film of the same title, Gray’s cracking caper picture has Mark Wahlberg, playing master fixer Charlie Croker, leading a top-flight den of thieves ensemble including Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Mos Def, and Donald Sutherland as they chase $35M in gold bullion from Venice to Los Angeles. Shot with brio and chock-a-block with set pieces—one, involving a trio of Mini Coopers, is an all-timer—Gray’s Italian Job is breezy genre filmmaking at its finest.
