Director: Marc Singer
2000 / 82min / 35mm
Singer’s documentary about the homeless community living in the Amtrak tunnels underneath New York’s Penn Station was the end result of the filmmaker’s spending years living alongside his subjects, whose subterranean society he depicts with stunning, somber black-and-white photography and empathetic attention. First-time director Singer eschews “explainer” narration to let his subjects speak for themselves, while a superb original score by DJ Shadow lends the proceedings an air of steely majesty.
