Tim Burton re-established Batman as a viable blockbuster property with his brooding, almost monochrome vision of Gotham City, but when Schumacher took the helm of the franchise, he injected it with a jolt of flamboyant color. Val Kilmer, inheriting the keys of the Batmobile and modeling a new be-nippled batsuit, has to contend with Jim Carrey’s rambunctious Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones’s Two-Face to save a brighter, brasher Gotham bathed in casino/discotheque light, in perhaps the most marvelously manic modern Batman film.
