A demonic house cat is only one of the cast of outlandish characters in Ôbayashi’s psychedelic ghost story in which a schoolgirl and six of her teen classmates go on a trip to her ailing aunt’s mist-wreathed country house and find themselves caught up a whirlpool of lo-fi nightmare visions and supernatural menaces with a taste for young flesh. Animated household appliances, airborne severed heads, and a ravenous piano are among the trials the girls face in this delirious (and hilarious) cult phenom.
