While police cadet Tony Leung is recruited by department superintendent Anthony Wong to go undercover in a triad gang, triad gangster Andy Lau is making his way into the police force in order to serve the interests of the underworld—and with this premise in place, Lau and Mak’s cat-and-mouse thriller proceeds to lay on the back-stabbings, double-deals, and head-spinning plot twists, as two spies serving different masters attempt to smoke one another out. The inspiration for Martin Scorsese’s 2006 The Departed, and a landmark work of 21st-century Hong Kong cinema.
