New Music: Sounds and Voices from the Avant-Garde New York 1971 / 2010 / 51 min. / Dir .Hans G. Helms
Produced in association with West German television, New Music brings together interviews with and performances from a who’s who of experimental/avant-garde composers, including John Cage, Steve Reich, Morton Subotnick, Gordon Mumma, Philip Glass, and many others.
“A hugely inspirational film for me, introducing me to such a wonderful array of musicians, watching and hearing them talk about their practice was and still is mind blowing for me. Christian and Michael Blackwood’s portrait of a time in New York where experimentation was breaking new grounds is still something to behold.”–Devonté Hynes
A Different Score / 2023 / 35 min. / Dir. Anaïs Ngbanzo
Making its world premiere at Metrograph, Ngbanzo’s directorial debut is the first documentary devoted to the life and work of the late composer, pianist, singer, and pioneer of musical minimalism Julius Eastman. Previously unseen interviews and recordings from Eastman’s archive reveal the political dimension of Eastman’s practice, while extensive footage of Devonté Hynes rehearsing and performing a selection of Eastman-penned pieces offers an exhilarating showcase for the work of this still-too-little-known 20th-century master.
