Living in an East London council estate flat with her mother and her precocious younger sister, hot-headed, socially isolated 15-year-old Mia (Katie Jarvis)—whose only outlet for her frustrations is solo hip-hop dancing—thinks she’s finally found someone who can give her direction in mum’s new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender), and winds up learning some hard life lessons instead. A distinctly 21st-century revivification of the tradition of British “kitchen sink” realism and working-class drama that vividly captures both the despair of adolescence and the redemptive power of pop music in young people’s lives.
Unfortunately, due to a QC issue with the 35mm print, this will be screening on DCP.
