A decade after Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner returned to the diamond to play Billy Chapel, a slumping 40-year-old pitcher for the Detroit Tigers who learns he’s going to be traded away from the team he’s played his entire career with on the eve of a season-ending series at Yankee Stadium. As a suddenly introspective Chapel takes stock of his life and relationship with his estranged girlfriend (Kelly Preston), Raimi cuts between Chapel’s vintage performance on the mound—called by Vin Scully!—and flashbacks vignettes, all the while showing a keen sense for the psychology of the game, kinetic brio, and enormous heart.
