Chiper and Stan, both well established in the Romanian film industry as a cinematographer and screenwriter, respectively, co-direct Ana Dumitrascu to the role of a lifetime in Immaculate, a deeply empathetic and quietly compelling drama of addiction that was Romania’s submission to this year’s Academy Awards. In a rehab clinic, 18-year old Daria (Dumitrascu, exquisitely expressive) struggles to stave off the advances of the mostly male patients, stay faithful to the imprisoned boyfriend who got her hooked in the first place, and maintain a simple faith in people that will be constantly tested.
