Mother of George
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Andrew Dosunmu
2013 / 107min / DCP
Young picked up the Cinematography Award at 2013’s Sundance Film Festival for his work on that year’s Mother of George and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints—two beautifully shot films with two totally distinct visual identities. For Dosunmu’s drama about a newly married Nigerian couple (Isaach de Bankolé and Danai Gurira) in Brooklyn who are trying to keep their restaurant open while coping with fertility issues, Young relied heavily on top lighting and, shooting with the then-new RED EPIC, used the camera’s capacity for high contrast images and velvety blacks, lending this “small” movie a brooding, lush intensity that feels enormous.
