Lady Snowblood

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Toshiya Fujita
1973 / 97min / DCP

Fresh from her performances as indomitable convict Matsu in Shunya Itō'’s Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion and a yakuza soldier in Kazuhiko Yamaguchi’s Wandering Ginza Butterfly, Meiko Kaji cemented her claim to being Japan’s premiere female action star as the sleekly deadly protagonist of Lady Snowblood, orphaned as a baby, trained as an assassin from childhood and, at age 20, out to get revenge for her slaughtered family. The influence on Tarantino’s Kill Bill is obvious in both the coolly elegant action choreography and the intricate unfolding of plot through flashback, but Kaji’s powerful, poised presence is one thing that can’t be imitated.
