Kelly's Heroes

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Brian G. Hutton
1970 / 144min / 35mm

While Sutherland’s other wartime comedy of 1970 didn’t achieve the critical cachet of M*A*S*H, heist caper Kelly’s Heroes—a sort of proto-Three Kings in which a gang of underpaid American GIs set out to lift a load of Nazi gold—is still a helluva lot of fun, thanks to the jaunty Lalo Schifrin score and the work of a simply delicious ensemble cast. Clint Eastwood leads the motley crew of misfits, which includes Telly Savalas and Don “Mr. Warmth” Rickles, but Sutherland is undeniably the film’s MVP as “Oddball,” a far-out tank commander who seems to have dropped into the Western Front directly from Haight-Ashbury.
