In Conversation: Theaster Gates & Christina Kiaer
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
2022 / 90min
On November 16, Theaster Gates and Dr. Christina Kiaer will engage in a dialogue that foregrounds the artist’s and scholars ongoing interests in propaganda and nation building. The Soviet project, alongside the progenitors of the Black Power Movement, coalesce in this series to show the complexities and contributions of political voicing and aesthetic and technical devices that show up around these significant movements. Conversant with the late Robert Bird’s archive of Russian film and literature - a key body of work presented as part of Gates’ New Museum exhibition, Young Lords and Their Traces - Gates and Kiaer will anchor their discussion in Tarkovsky’s seminal film “Andrei Rublev” while offering reflections on the sacred, the radicalized and the culturally specific.
This event is organized in conjunction with Theaster Gates: Vestment at Gagosian, 976 Madison Avenue and Theaster Gates: Young Lords and Their Traces at the New Museum.
