Set in 1850s India on the eve of the rule of the British Raj, Ray’s lone Hindi-language feature is a Technicolor knockout filmed in the “golden city” of Lucknow, where two landowners pass their idle hours intently focused on games of chess, oblivious to the political machinations going on around them. Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey, as the chess players, are joined in the cast by Richard Attenborough and Bollywood star Amjad Khan in this wry portrayal of aristocratic decadence that captures all the splendor and folly of an era.
