Apur Sansar

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Satyajit Ray
1959 / 107min / DCP

In the final film of Ray’s Apu Trilogy, we find the grown-up Apu (Soumitra Chatterjee, in the first of 14 films he made with Ray) now relocated to Kolkata where he barely manages to scrape out a living as a writer and private tutor. A trip to the countryside leads to Apu’s unexpected marriage to Aparna (Sharmila Tagore)—and to his discovery of new heights of love and depths of tragedy while traveling a winding road towards the final acceptance of adult responsibility. A humane and deeply moving work, often ranked among the finest films ever made in India or, indeed, anywhere.

4K restorations made by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
