John Early Selects: Muriel's Wedding

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: P. J. Hogan, P. J. Hogan
1994 / 104min / 35mm

Actor, comedian and friend of Metrograph, John Early returns to Metrograph to introduce another of his silver screen favorites, Muriel’s Wedding.

“Muriel’s Wedding is the crown jewel and bleeding heart of the absolutely unhinged, f*ggy Australian cinema of the early ’90s. Just like the ABBA music that scores it, the film’s gone from kitsch artifact to high art over time—its merit and depth melting the hearts of the snobs initially afraid of its emotional extremes, careening structure, leopard print, and cellulite. Its loyal fan base was built on the backs of freaks with worn VHS copies, but Muriel’s Wedding and Toni Collette’s performance are truly meant to be seen on the big screen with a packed house. Come watch the movie I named my dog after so that every time she peed on the rug I could say, ‘You’re terrible, Muriel.’—John Early
