Made with an all-female crew including composer Lindsay Cooper and legendary cinematographer Babette Mangolte, Potter’s radical first feature, a sui generis sci-fi musical that interrogates the legacy (and leering gaze) of Busby Berkeley, tells the intertwining stories of a bank computer clerk, Celeste (Colette Laffont), and an introspective film star, Ruby (Julie Christie) who, by coming together, start to discover the links between their respective trades in finance and beauty. A landmark of ’80s feminist filmmaking, setting the stage for Potter’s The London Story and Orlando.
