The year is 2027. Joana (Dira Paes), working in a notary’s office in the Brazilian civil service, deals with divorce cases, but being a member of Divino Amor, an Evangelical Christian group which has achieved significant political power, she does everything in her power to dissuade couples from separation, using the sect’s rather unorthodox partner-swapping methods. Unable to conceive a child in spite of her prayers, absorbed in her faith, Joana waits on a miracle from God—though doesn’t know quite how to react when one comes. Envisaging a neon-washed near-future of commodified Christianity that’s a Day-Glo, permissive paradise, filmmaker and visual artist Mascaro creates a troubling, maverick work of speculative sci-fi.
