In 1962 London, with the very real threat of nuclear war constantly on the radio, 17-year-old beatnik wannabe best friends Ginger and Rosa (Elle Fanning and Alice Englert) are beset by fear of the future—not only the bomb, but the possibility of turning out like their thwarted mothers (Christina Hendricks and Jodhi May). An acute depiction of female adolescence and the painful, necessary, universal experience of asserting independence from one’s parents, Ginger & Rosa sees the ever-experimental Potter take a surprising turn towards straightforward drama, her coming of age tale given emotional heft by a uniformly superb ensemble cast that includes Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Spall, Oliver Platt, and a briefly and beautifully deployed Annette Benning.
