Director: Ernest R. Dickerson
1992 / 95min / DCP

Longtime Spike Lee cinematographer Dickerson makes an impressive directorial debut with this crime drama about four aimless Harlem teenagers—played by Tupac Shakur, Omar Epps, Khalil Kain, and Jermaine Hopkins—who, inspired by the sight of James Cagney in White Heat and tired of being harassed by cops and rival gangs, hatch a plan to win respect by sticking up a corner store. Aspiring DJ Epps keeps a dream alive of using his music to get off the corner even as things start getting out of control, while a hugely charismatic Shakur, in his screen acting debut, gives a performance that develops from brooding frustration to trigger-happy megalomania.
