The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Colin Higgins
1982 / 114min / DCP
Popular wisdom had it that the live-action musical was six-feet under at the dawn of the ’80s, but the combined easy Southern charm of Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds was enough to wake the dead in this adaptation of the 1978 Broadway phenomenon, based on the story of the real-life Chicken Ranch brothel in La Grange, Texas. Small-town sheriff Reynolds is happy to look away while madame Parton—also his sometimes lover—keeps the locals provided access to World’s Oldest Profession, that is until big-city TV muckracker Dom DeLuise arrives in town to upset the delicate local ecosystem with a scandal. Parton originals join Carol Hall’s Broadway score, which gave her a Top 10 hit with “Hard Candy Christmas.”
