The Cat and the Canary

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Radley Metzger
1978 / 98min / 35mm

Metzger, best known for his high-finish, sophisticated softcore films of the late ’60s and early ’70s, decamped to the UK to produce this ringing revival of the “Old Dark House” movie, based on John Willard’s much-adapted 1922 play of the same title. Twenty years after the death of an eccentric millionaire, potential heirs and heiresses convene at his rambling estate—and when Annabelle (Carol Lynley) is named sole beneficiary of his fortune, she’s immediately a target for a cast of suspicious connivers that includes Honor Blackman, Edward Fox, and Wendy Hiller. Hidden torture dungeons, escaped lunatics, and suave style for miles make for lip-smacking intrigue in Metzger’s giddy whodunnit.
