The third of four collaborations between British playwright Harold Pinter and American expat director Losey, ensemble drama Accident reunites Losey with his The Servant star Dirk Bogarde, never better than he is here as a married fortysomething Oxford tutor who has become increasingly consumed by a smoldering desire for one of his students, the Austrian Anna (Jacqueline Sassard). A gelid, gloomy portrait of midlife melancholy told with an intricate flashback structure inspired by the narrative experiments of Alain Resnais, Accident is a thorny thicket of malice and repressed desire.
