A middle-aged New York-based corporate executive (John Randolph), after making a strings-attached contract with a mysterious corporation that provide him with extensive plastic surgery and a new life in Malibu, is reborn as Rock Hudson at his hunkiest. Ironically, this film about the dangerous allure of second chances gives two old studio system stalwarts the opportunity to show a rapidly changing Hollywood what they could still do—Hudson’s performance is raw and revelatory, while veteran cinematographer James Wong Howe, in the picture business since the ’20s, photographs with an innovative, youthful exuberance.
