Wings of Desire [35mm]

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Wim Wenders
1987 / 128min / 35mm

Invisible trenchcoated guardian angels watch over beleaguered Berliners from on high in Wenders’s soaring city symphony, which follows one of them, Damiel (Bruno Ganz), as he sacrifices his immortality for a chance at love with lonesome trapeze artist Solveig Dommartin, learning the pains and pleasures of human existence from ex-angel Peter Falk. Shot by DP Henri Alekan in sepia monochrome and color, respectively representing the angelic and mortal views of the city, Wenders’s German homecoming following an American interlude would become one of his most beloved films.

“Wings of Desire is one of my favorite films thanks to its unique juxtaposition of a poetic storyline and the stark realism of postwar Berlin. While working on Suspiria, I did extensive research into the history of Berlin, concentrating on its famous Wall, which we had to reconstruct in both Italy and Germany. Wenders’s film was not just a visual reference—it also offered a cinematic essay on the soul of the city, which in turn helped enrich the many levels of Suspiria’s imagery.” —Inbal Weinberg
