Kelly followed up sleeper hit Donnie Darko with this vision of pop apocalypse which, while widely greeted with incomprehension and hostility on initial release, has proven a tenacious cult property over time, eerily prescient of contemporary American “society,” such as it is. Reality television, increasingly militarized society, and celebrity culture all come in for a skewering in Kelly’s scattergun satire, whose once-in-a-lifetime cast includes Seann William Scott, The Rock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Wallace Shawn, cultivating a plan for world conquest in the role of Baron von Westphalen.
