For his first lead role following television stardom, Johnny Depp teamed up with the Pope of Trash and turned out this riotous Romeo and Juliet-inspired celebration of 1950’s juvenile delinquent movies. The dreamy Depp, soul-singing and hip-shaking in the title role, is locked in an endless war with the preppie “squares” on the outskirts of Baltimore in a community of Waters’s Dreamlander regulars including Mink Stole, Traci Lords, and Ricki Lake, with Iggy Pop the patriarch of this delinquent “drape” population.
