La Captive

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Chantal Akerman
2000 / 118min / DCP

Taking its inspiration from the fifth volume of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, Akerman’s newly restored, icy, absorbing study of monomaniacal erotic fixation depicts the anguished relationship between the pathologically jealous Marcel stand-in Simon (Stanislas Merhar) and his Albertine-esque lover Ariane (Sylvie Testud) who, even with her apparent acquiescence to Simon’s fantasy of total possession, can do nothing to ease his self-inflicted agony. A formalist feminist thriller that quickly establishes a vice-like grip on the viewer and the single best cinematic “adaptation” of Proust, which succeeds through throwing literal-minded fidelity to the wind.

Post-screening Q&A with La Captive author, Christine Smallwood moderated by Anna Shechtman on Saturday, March 30th
