Stuntman-turned-actor Richard Farnsworth has his career-capping role as Alvin Straight, a widower and World War II veteran living in rural Iowa who, upon hearing that his brother in Wisconsin is ailing, sets out to see his sibling through the only means of transport available to a man, like himself, with failing eyesight: namely, his John Deere riding lawnmower. Lynch, who had so memorably exposed the darkness lurking beneath the sunny surfaces of small-town America in his Blue Velvet, steps into the light in this singly leisurely road movie based on a real-life odyssey undertaken by septuagenarian Straight in 1994, charmingly anecdotal in structure and brimming with unmistakable fondness for the people and landscapes of the Midwest.
