Star Machiko Kyō is quite literally out of this world—that is, belonging to the realm of the spirits—in Mizoguchi’s adaptation of the 18th-century ghost stories of Ueda Akinari. In war-torn feudal Japan, a potter defies his wife’s wishes and takes his wares to market, in so doing bringing grief upon them both, and leading him to take shelter finally with Kyō’s noble Lady Wakasa, who isn’t exactly what she seems.
