The Quiet Earth
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Geoff Murphy
2019 / 91min / DCP
After top secret energy project Operation Flashlight goes terribly awry, attached scientist Zac (Bruno Lawrence) wakes up one day to discover that he may very well be the only human on the face of the planet left alive. Along the way to his eventual encounter of two other survivors, with whom he forms a love triangle of sorts, the film develops into a singularly lyrical, psychologically detailed, and altogether rather meditative take on post-apocalyptic cinema, with the trio forced to work in harmony to stave off still further catastrophe. To the adrenal, angry, Australian Mad Max, this contemplative New Zealand production poses a quieter Kiwi response.
“Revisiting the last-man-alive scenario, A Quiet Earth leaves you wondering if you’d behave any differently from the main character, when subjected to the same fate.” —Neil deGrasse Tyson
