The Kid

Sun Aug 9
Director: Charlie Chaplin
1921 / 53min / 35mm

Regarded as the Tramp’s first jump into feature films, this family-friendly six-reeler shows Chaplin at his most brilliant and most sentimental, plumbing memories of his own boyhood of almost Dickensian deprivation. The Tramp adopts an abandoned boy, played by soon-to-be-child-superstar Jackie Coogan, and fights against remarkable odds to keep the lad at his side. Gives us some of the most moving passages in Chaplin’s nakedly emotional filmography, including Charlie’s desperate search through city poorhouses for his missing charge, and the visualization of a poor boy’s imagining of heaven.
