Director: Tomm Moore
2014 / 93min / DCP
Irish animator Moore, following up his justly acclaimed The Secret of Kells, returned to the well of Celtic folklore for this lovely, painstakingly hand-drawn film, inspired by the mythic figure of the selkie, a seal-like sea creature said to be able to take on human form. Lonely kids Ben and Saoirse leave their lighthouse keeper dad behind to stay with their granny in Dublin, but when the mute and withdrawn Saoirse sickens in the city, they must undertake a journey back to the seaside, hindered and abetted along the way by all manner of mystical, mysterious entities.
